My work is a response to the place in which I live: the west coast of Wales in and around New Quay, Ceredigion. Born and raised on a farm, I developed an intimate relationship with my environment and a deep connection to the spirit of the place. I am positioned on the edge of landscape, where land merges with sea and sky. My paintings do not set out to be precise representations: they are internal and external expressions of experience elicited by the painting process.
The stunning countryside and coastline of this part of West Wales has influenced and informed all my creative work over the years. Like many who have grown up on a farm, my experiences of the immediate rural environment have become etched on my consciousness. My strong connection to the soil and the sea has endured, even through extended periods living in more urban locations.
I graduated from Central Saint Martins Art College, London, in ceramics: the study of clay and its transformations through fire. The visceral qualities of paint, clay and earth, colours and textures, continue to excite me. I have recently completed an MA in Fine Art: Painting at Aberystwyth University.
