Steve Wilson

Biography – I graduated from Canterbury school of art in 1990, after which I began working as a self employed artist, illustrator, designer, animator and lecturer.

The predominant theme for my work is landscape. In my paintings objects are simply arranged in pared down landscape spaces that help to convey an atmosphere of calm and contemplation, they are heavily layered, glaze upon glaze, which helps to create greater depth and intensity. I have also been developing a series of portraits, some of which have been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery.

I have exhibited at many venues including the National Portrait Galleries in London and Edinburgh, The Royal Academy of Arts and Mall Galleries London. Private galleries include Man Trafod Gallery, Fishguard; Watch House Gallery, Enniscorthy Ireland; Oxford Gallery, Oxford; Offer Waterman Gallery Cork Street, London; Oriel Q, Pembrokeshire and other venues around the country.

In January 2011 I was awarded an Arts Council grant to complete a new body of work, which I exhibited in November 2012.

I live and work in my native Pembrokeshire, the area that is the source of my inspiration.

I have been developing a series of drawings in response to and based on the observation of the birds and animals and natural objects observed by walking areas of rural Pembrokeshire. I draw by working an eraser into blackened surfaces, essentially drawing by reduction, which lends itself well to the objectives I have of simplifying and intensifying the qualities of the subjects I observe. The images of the birds and animals are often taken into abstraction or ‘assemblage, where they are reconstructed to accentuate certain qualities. Some of the drawings are simply worked from life, where the abstract qualities of the animals speak for themselves. Drawing is as important to me as painting, I see it as an end in itself with the potential to create powerful and intense imagery.
