Born in Port Talbot, I became a qualified school teacher, teaching art as a subsidiary when I initially started. Though not trained as an artist, I have maintained a lifelong interest in drawing and painting, early influences being Cezanne and Turner, and later the English neo romantics Sutherland, Nash, Piper and Ivan Hitchins. After much coursework and lecturing, with Dennis Creffold and John Epstein, who contributed considerably to my artistic development, as did a close association with the Swansea based artist Mike Freeman. I became Head of Art at Ysgol Castell Newydd, Bridgend.
I paint mainly landscapes and seascapes in oils in a semi abstract style, but also some representational pieces in ink and watercolour. I believe that painting is a personal language of what is actually felt in front of ‘nature’. Structure and design are indispensable basics for any work of art, as is colour, line and rhythm, thus hopefully introducing an element of visual music.
I have exhibited at Margam orangery and Port Talbot Art Centre, and Afan Institute of Arts and Idea, and also various southwest Wales galleries including the West Wales Art Gallery, St Davids Cathedral, and Margam Park.
