THE VIEW FROM HERE
I was born in London and settled in South Wales in 1980, I now live near Brecon and have done so for the last twenty five years. In fulfilment of a long held wish to study art, I completed (2013) a Foundation Year in Art and Design in Swansea, and have vigorously pursued my own practice in the ensuing years, exhibiting in a variety of locations, and recently I was made a member of The Royal Watercolour Society of Wales. I am currently in my first year of a BA Fine Art course at Swansea Art School (UWTSD) – this Degree is something I am very keen to pursue alongside my work. I want to embrace and fully engage with contemporary art practice – I have taken up where I left off in 2013 – it is an incredible opportunity.
I cannot separate the human form from the landscape, and humanity from inanimate objects. This has led me to collaging with my life drawings which is something I often do. Life drawing is central to my practice and I like to experiment with diverse materials and techniques, this is what drives me forward. The past forms and informs the present and the future and memories make up the fabric of our existence. Those people places and situations that I have encountered never fully disappear from view. Memories create complex responses and invite me to pause engage and question – this offers me opportunities to create or revisit feelings – those feelings that make us human.
‘Drawing’ with wire metal and other (preferably found) materials is both fascinating and satisfying, the pieces often find their own path and I am encouraged to look at and respond to the world around me. I make for interior and exterior spaces. My practice ‘THE VIEW FROM HERE’ began with an obsession with the beautiful ever changing view of the Black Mountains (Hay Bluff) from my home. This view holds memories of all those who have crossed back and forth to be here over the past twenty years. As my practice evolved, it became the view from inside my head and enabled me to give form to an internal dialogue. ‘THE VIEW FROM HERE’ is where I was, where I am, and where I might be heading.
